He tell us that, on Christmas day, the family would eat the main meal at around 1-2 o'clock, sit a bit and let things digest and listen to the message from the Queen. During this time, the children were banned from the room to take their noisy play elsewhere and were sent along each with a sugar mouse to keep them quiet. Dessert was pudding, made two to three weeks ahead by his mum and loaded with raisins, juicy fat sultanas, orange peel and spices. In many families, the pudding was doused with brandy and set alight.
